AKD Official France Visit Postponed Again Amid Domestic Turmoil

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s scheduled official visit to France has been postponed once again, with senior government sources confirming that the decision was driven by urgent domestic crises that require the President’s direct involvement.

According to officials, the government is currently grappling with the fallout from the Negombo Prison violence, an incident that triggered nationwide concern over prison security, administrative accountability, and law‑and‑order stability. The President has reportedly instructed authorities to prioritize restoring order and completing internal investigations before proceeding with any major foreign engagements.

The visit to France was expected to include the signing of three key Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) covering economic cooperation, financial assistance, and defence collaboration. However, diplomatic sources say these agreements are not fully finalized, making it impractical to proceed with the trip at this time.

The postponement also affects discussions related to Sri Lanka’s bid to secure France’s support for renewing the GSP+ concession, a crucial trade benefit for the country’s export sector.

Government insiders describe the situation as a combination of “domestic compulsions” and administrative pressure, forcing the President to delay the visit until conditions stabilize.

Officials have not announced a new date for the France visit, but sources indicate it will be rescheduled once the domestic situation is under control and the pending agreements are ready for signing.
