Cardinal Ranjith Seeks to Intervene in Court of Appeal Case on Easter Sunday Probe, Citing Threat to Victims’ Right to Justice

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has filed an intervention petition before the Court of Appeal on 16 July 2026, seeking to be added as a party in the writ application filed by Major General Suresh Sallay (Retd.). The Cardinal argues that the reliefs sought by Sallay—who has been named a suspect in the ongoing Easter Sunday attack investigations—directly affect the rights of the Catholic Church and the victims of the 2019 bombings.

In his petition, Cardinal Ranjith states that as the Archbishop of Colombo and spiritual leader of the Catholic community, he represents thousands of victims and families devastated by the attacks. He asserts that any attempt to halt, delay, or obstruct investigations would undermine the pursuit of truth and justice.

The petition recounts key findings of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry, highlights contradictions between Sallay’s testimony and allegations raised in the Channel 4 documentary “Sri Lanka’s Easter Bombings”, and stresses the need for impartial and independent investigations. The Cardinal notes that the Church has consistently advocated for accountability—locally and internationally—and has supported victims through rehabilitation, legal action, and global appeals.

Cardinal Ranjith requests the Court to dismiss Sallay’s application, citing suppression of material facts and lack of legal grounds. He further asks the Court to grant him a hearing, arguing that his participation is essential for a fair and comprehensive adjudication.
