India Grants SLR 600 Million for Medical Equipment to New Deniyaya Base Hospital

India has extended a SLR 600 million grant to Sri Lanka for supplying advanced medical equipment to the newly relocated Base Hospital, Deniyaya, strengthening post‑Cyclone Ditwah recovery efforts and bilateral health cooperation.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 13 July 2026 by India’s High Commissioner H.E. Santosh Jha and Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, in the presence of Health Minister Hon. (Dr.) Nalinda Jayatissa.

The grant will support equipping the hospital—currently being relocated due to disaster‑risk concerns—with modern facilities across critical units including HDU, emergency and isolation wards, operating theaters, OPD, laboratories, CSSD, radiology, blood bank, physiotherapy, and neonatal care (SCBU/NICU). Installation will align with the final phase of construction, expected to conclude within three years.

This initiative is part of India’s USD 450 million assistance package for Sri Lanka’s reconstruction and rehabilitation following Cyclone Ditwah.

Health-sector cooperation remains a cornerstone of India–Sri Lanka development ties, reflected in landmark projects such as the Suwa Seriya ambulance service, Dickoya multi-specialty hospital, Batticaloa surgical unit, upgrades to Jaffna, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu hospitals, and ongoing construction of emergency and ward complexes in Mannar and Mullaitivu.
